Kevin McCarthy is like ‘a substitute teacher mad students are throwing things at him’: Seth Meyers

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) spent nearly nine hours boring his colleagues in rants that included his complaints about baby carrots. But according to McCarthy, he was addressing the most important issues he had in the infrastructure bill.

“Have you ever eaten one of these baby carrots?” asked McCarthy at just after 3 a.m. “I’ll lead you in on a little secret: there is no such thing. They are just big carrots, they chop them, they charge you more, and you buy them.”

At one point, he even proclaimed, “Mr. Speaker, I’d love to debate Jim Crow one day.”

McCarthy has the amped-up energy of a fifth-grader telling a classmate, ‘I have a friend and his name is Timmy and he went to the zoo and met a donkey and the donkey took a big poop and it was so funny!’ Seriously, what was the point of that story? I feel like I zoned out during an anecdote at a dinner party and now I have to catch up to figure out what the hell he’s talking about.”

Meyers later asked his producers if the news was true about the baby carrots they just cut up. “What about baby corn? Seems like it should be consistent across all vegetables. F*ck hell of a way to find out is all I’m saying.”

The highlights of the McCarthy rant came from Democrats heckling him for opposing the infrastructure bill because of baby carrots. In a Fox News appearance Sunday, McCarthy lamented, “it’s about breaking down this bill … and the amount of heckling that they would try to do to stop me from being able to talk…” In fact, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) encouraged McCarthy to keep going since no one was watching anyway.

“I didn’t know I’d talk that long but right before I went on the floor, I got this very jarring news about baby carrots,” Meyers mocked. “This guy is such a goober he sounds like a substitute teacher complaining to the principal that his high school class won’t stop chucking things at him.”
